Sarasota is the seat of the Sarasota County located on the southwestern coast of the United States, fronting the Sarasota Bay and including several barrier islands (Lido Key, St. Armands Key, Otter Key, Coon Key, Bird Key, and portions of Siesta Key) between it and the Gulf of Mexico. Sarasota is recognized as a medium-sized resort and waterfront community with a humid subtropical climate. It is also popular as a beach destination as well as for its arts programs and activities and architecture.

With a total area of 25.9 square miles of which 14.9 square miles is land while 11.0 square miles is water, Sarasota is a combination of touristy accommodations like hotels, resorts and cozy inns, and historic residences. However, regular residents numbering about 52,715 people (according to the Census of 2000) mostly own their own homes or live in complexes or high-rise apartments. Residences are mostly 2-3 bedrooms in homes that have been built between 1970 and 1999. There are also a number of old, well-maintained but not historic homes and a rising number of newer homes built from 2000.

The people of Sarasota have a pretty even distribution of population.  Each age bracket is well-represented, about 10-12% of the total population but the majority belongs to the 35-54 age range. There is also 22% of people that are 65 years and older.A good portion of the population is married and living together, while the rest are still single and living independently. Sarasota is predominantly white although there’s a large portion of Hispanics and Blacks in the neighborhood.  As such, English is the common language but Spanish can also be heard and spoken in many areas. There is also a 17% portion of the population that was born on foreign soil.

In terms of employment, residents are naturally mostly employed by the accommodation and retail services, seeing as Sarasota is a major tourist destination in Florida. There are a good number of residents employed in the health care industry too because of the retirement villages in the neighborhood. However, since the community has high rate of High School graduates and those with Bachelor’s degrees, there are a number of employed workers in offices and managerial positions. This translates to a high median per capita income of about $32,329.

One of the perks of living in a resort and tourist destination is the accessibility of various leisure activities and amenities. There are a several golf courses, sport fishing and tour charters, museums, nature parks and zoos. Shopping places and restaurants are also abundant. The location of these prime spots including the beaches is very convenient and most everyone can be at any of these locations within 20 minutes.  Most residents prefer to drive although public transportation is available.
